ChemiCon 2016 - Solving Mysteries Through Forensic Analysis- SOLD OUT
October 19, 2016              9:00 am – 2:30 pm
Grades 6-8

As part of National Chemistry Week, DHDC has teamed up with WTAMU and the American Chemical Society to create a day of experiential learning for area students. Through a series of hands-on learning activities and interactive demonstrations, students will investigate this year’s National Chemistry Week theme, Solving Mysteries Through Forensics, focusing on the chemistry of fibers and forensic analysis.

EVENT DETAILS

  • Event includes a series of hand-on science labs, special guest presentations and a rotation in our Top Secret: License to Spy exhibit where students must use their newfound forensics skills to solve a baffling mystery!
  • Reservation deadline is October 3, but will close early if event reaches capacity.
  • Education Partner Districts:     FREE
    Non-Partner Districts:              $5 per student
  • DHDC will set rotation schedules for groups, with a lunch period included.  Lunch will not be provided.

3rd Annual Egg Drop Engineering Competition- SOLD OUT
November 18, 2016        9:00 am-1:00 pm
Grades 5-12

The messiest engineering competition in Texas is back for another round! Student teams will create their best egg-cradling device and bring it to DHDC for a 20-foot drop from our scissor lift. Avoid a gooey egg-splosion to earn max points. Awards are given for the top overall scores in each age division, best use of recycled materials, and most innovative overall device design.

 EVENT DETAILS

  • No entry fee for competition.
  • Maximum of 5 students per team. Limit of 10 team entries per campus. 
  • Students compete in four age divisions: Grades 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, and 11/12.
  • Registration deadline is October 28, but will close early if event reaches capacity.
  • Event entry includes exhibit hall admission to DHDC.
  • Schools may reserve additional activities for their visit (Space Theater shows, hands-on science labs, etc.) at normal DHDC school rates. Education Partner Districts may reserve additional activities at no charge. Science Labs will be scheduled after conclusion of competition. Advance reservations are required for any additional activities, and those reservations must be received by October 28.

DHDC Christmas Spectacular- SOLD OUT
December 13, 14 or 15, 2016                       9:30 am - 1:45 pm
Grades K-5

This event sells out quickly, so book early to reserve your spot!

The DHDC Christmas Spectacular is a fun-filled day of holiday themed activities which immerse students in interactive learning opportunities. Students will have a blast participating in activities like St. Nick’s Science Show and making their own batch of Glittering Glacier Gak, and teachers will love this hassle-free day of learning with no messy classroom to clean up afterward!  The event also includes a special showing of our limited edition Christmas Space Theater show.  Students and teachers alike will enjoy singing along with their favorite Christmas tunes during this full-dome holiday adventure, and just like Santa, students will have milk and cookies to enjoy during the show!

  • Event includes St. Nick’s Science Live! Show, make and take learning activities in the DHDC Holiday Workshop, an exclusive showing of our Christmas Space Theater animated feature and an exhibit hall time. Students will get milk and cookies during their Space Theater rotation.

Weathering the Storm: The Science of Severe Weather- SOLD OUT
March 3, 2017                     9:30 am – 1:45 pm
Grades K-5

As part of Texas Severe Weather Awareness Week, join DHDC and our special guests for an interactive learning adventure where students will explore the science of severe weather and learn how to safely weather the storm. 

EVENT DETAILS 

  • Event includes hands-on learning activities, presentations from the National Weather Service Amarillo, KAMR Chief Meteorologist John Harris* and veteran storm chaser Jason Boggs*, a special one-day only showing of Tornado Alley in the Space Theater and a short exhibit hall time.  *Currently scheduled to appear.
  • Reservation deadline is February 3, but will close early if event reaches capacity. 
  • DHDC Education Partner Districts:     FREE

WEATHERING THE STORM RESERVATION FORM- SOLD OUT


Celebrate Earth Day!- SOLD OUT
April 21, 2017                     9:30 am - 1:45 pm
Grades K-5

 Join DHDC, WTAMU and the American Chemical Society as we celebrate our home planet and dive into this year’s theme, Chemistry Helps Feed the World, examining the science and ecology of agriculture.  A critical part of our regional economy, students will explore the chemical processes at work in growing, nurturing and harvesting the crops grown in the Texas Panhandle through hands-on learning stations, interactive demonstrations, and special guest presentations. Students will also learn how to repurpose throw-away items into treasures in our make-and-take “upcycled” art station!

  • Reservation deadline is March 31, but will close early if event reaches capacity.

CELEBRATE EARTH DAY RESERVATION FORM- SOLD OUT


DHDC Catapult Challenge 2017
May 19, 2017                       9:00 am – 1:00 pm
Grades 5-12

Student teams will test their engineering and design skills and expand their knowledge of math and physics as they create and construct a catapult to compete for eternal glory! Awards will be given for top teams in each age division, along with non-points awards for the Fiercest Fighter (best overall catapult design) and the Innovator’s Award (most creative or original catapult design.)
